The retinal laser assists doctors in treating diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears, and leaking blood vessels. The use of the laser prevents bleeding and leakage of fluid in the back of the eye and may assist in and preventing a retinal tear from becoming a retinal detachment.
Patients with acute angle-closure glaucoma can benefit from YAG laser treatment. During YAG laser iridotomy, a special contact lens is applied to the patient’s cornea, which helps to focus the laser, allowing the creation of an opening in the iris. YAG laser treatment also assists in removing cloudy, post-surgical membranes from the eye after cataract surgery. In this surgical procedure, focused laser applications are used to restore clarity to the optical path of the eye.
“Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty” assists doctors in treating glaucoma. Using this laser therapy, patients may be able to avoid surgery and reduce their dependence on eye drops. The SLT laser treatment selectively targets pigmented cells while preserving the surrounding tissue. Multiple re-treatments can be performed to lower pressure in the future scarring. This is a significant advantage over traditional therapies since it causes no coagulative damage, or clotting, within the trabecular meshwork of the eye.
VISX™ Excimer Laser – Star S4 (LASIK)
Patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism can benefit from this laser system. It provides the best in safety, accuracy and comfort. VISX™ CustomVue individualized laser vision correction is WaveScan®-driven, which enables the physician to measure and correct unique imperfections in each individual’s vision. Many of these imperfections could never be measured before using standard methods for measuring glasses and contact lenses.
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a new, noninvasive, noncontact, real-time imaging technology which can image retinal structures at a level of millionths of a meter. The anatomic layers within the retina can be differentiated and retinal thickness can be measured. This enables the doctors at Northwest Eye Physicians to use state of the art imaging technology to diagnose and evaluate glaucoma, diabetes, macular degeneration, and many other retinal diseases.
Our patients can also be tested with the “Humphrey Visual Field” automated perimeter. This device is used to accurately measure the patient’s peripheral vision. This is particularly useful in the evaluation of glaucoma and other diseases involving the optic nerve.
This instrument allows for a high resolution imaging of the corneal surface to detect various diseases and abnormalities. It can also be used for contact lens fitting and LASIK.
An ultrasonic device used to measure the thickness of the cornea. This measurement is useful in evaluation and management of glaucoma. It is also used to determine whether or not a patient is a candidate for LASIK.
